Earthquake hits Northern Philippines

28 July 2022 Announcement
  • Magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit northern Philippines triggering landslides and rockfalls
  • No casualties or damage to the MCB drill site operations based on initial assessment

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit the northern part of the Philippines on Wednesday, 27 July 2022 at 8:43am local time. The epicenter was placed at the small town of Dolores, Abra some 130km from Celsius’ Maalinao-Caigutan-Biyog (“MCB”) project site in the Cordillera Administrative Region.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismoloy described the shaking as a major earthquake which killed four people and injured 60, triggered landslides, rock falls, and collapsed structures.

An initial assessment of the MCB project site revealed no damage to the drill site or basecamp. However, drilling operations have been suspended as aftershocks are still occurring.

“We are monitoring the project site to ensure that all of our employees and workers are safe as aftershocks continue to be felt. While there was no damage or casualties reported, we will remain vigilant and carry out engineering inspections on  buildings and  the drill site before we resume drilling operations,” said Country Operations Director Peter Hume.

Roads leading to the project site are not passable at the moment. The local government unit is working overtime to restore electricity and other services as soon as possible The company’s emergency response team is closely coordinating with the community and the local government in extending support where needed.

Since last year and early this year, the company has trained the local community members/volunteers on emergency response and basic first aid in preparation for critical situations like this, in partnership with the Pasil Municipal Bureau of Fire Protection, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, and the National Red Cross.
